The 2 big changes in Instagram’s 2025 Terms Update
A LOOK AT INSTAGRAM’S UPCOMING TERMS OF USE CHANGES
You've heard the rumors that Instagram's terms of use are changing, effective January 1, 2025.
So what are these big changes?
That’s what I’m diving into in this post.
Change number one: the fact checking process
The first big change was in the Content Removal section of Instagram’s terms of use. The new language says:
We work with independent fact-checkers in many jurisdictions to combat misinformation. When content has been rated by fact-checkers, we may add a notice to provide additional context. You can find more information about fact-checking here.
Yes, that page on fact-checking already existed. But what this new language does is specifically give Instagram/Meta permission to add a notice to your content that “provide[s] additional context.”
Change number two: Your options if you don’t agree to the update
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve seen an influencer, or non-influencer, or self-proclaimed “expert” talk through some secret way to “let Meta know” you don’t agree to their updated legal terms…
Listen.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…
If you don’t agree to Instagram’s updated legal terms, your option is to stop using the platform.
That’s it.
And now, It’s right there in Instagram’s terms.
So the next time you see a friend posting something like “I DO NOT CONSENT TO INSTAGRAM ADDING FACT-CHECKING CONTEXT TO MY POSTS…” feel free to ignore it. (Or gently educate her.)
